ASTIAN REY
Born in 1987 in Kiev, Ukraine.
In 2010 was educated at the University Boris Grinchenko, Faculty of Fine Arts.
Astian Rey is the founder of his own direction of art - “Sacred Brutalism”. In his work he explores themes of religion, mysticism and the occult, as well as their role in the development of humanity.
Astian is known for his interdisciplinary approach to art, including sculpture, installation, literature and musical-performative experiments.
He is the author and performer of the music project Codex Reptilius.
The works are in private collections in Ukraine, the USA and Europe.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In order to understand who we are, it is necessary to study our past. That is why in my artistic practice I explore the themes of religion, mysticism and the occult. Everything in the physical world has a beginning and the end, and at the same time everything is cyclical. The birth of something inevitably leads to death. But the end of one matter means the beginning of another. I prefer to communicate with the viewer in the language of symbols taken from alchemy, Kabbalah and sacred geometry. I am often inspired by medieval religious art, manuscripts, as well as ritual objects in which there is a lot of gold.
