ASTIAN REY

Born in 1987 in Kyiv, Ukraine

In 2010, he graduated from Kyiv Borys Grinchenko University, Faculty of Fine Arts.

Astian is known for his interdisciplinary approach to art, which includes sculpture, installation, literature, musical and performative experiments, as well as original clothing painting.

In his work, he explores the themes of religion, mysticism and the occult, as well as their role in the development of humanity. He also tries to draw attention to socially significant topics, such as the influence of religious sects on the consciousness of modern people, as well as the search for ways of psychological rehabilitation of those affected by the influence of such organizations.

He founded his own direction in art - "Sacred Brutalism".

He is the author and composer of the musical project Codex Reptilius, for which he personally records music tracks in the style of heavy metal with ambient elements and ethnic motifs.

The artworks are in private collections in Ukraine, the USA and Europe.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In order to understand who we are, it is necessary to study our past. That is why in my artistic practice I explore the themes of religion, mysticism and the occult. Everything in the physical world has a beginning and the end, and at the same time everything is cyclical. The birth of something inevitably leads to death. But the end of one matter means the beginning of another. I prefer to communicate with the viewer in the language of symbols taken from alchemy, Kabbalah and sacred geometry. I am often inspired by medieval religious art, manuscripts, as well as ritual objects in which there is a lot of gold.
